Electroactive Polymers

Presentations | English

In an electric field, some polymers can change their shape and size. They are EAPs, who have a large number of features which make them stand apart and it includes high response speed, low density, extreme light weight, inexpensive, fracture tolerant and compliant. Mainly they are of two types, Ionic and Electronic. Ionic are excited with displacement of ions, while stimulating electrically. They have strong bending capability and expensive. Electronic EAPs are tempted to change with stronger electric field. They are used as planar, since large plane deformation is happening. It is called as dielectric elastomers due to high flexible nature, light, thin and can be driven to any shape of choice. Used in artificial muscles, Braille scripts, micro fluidics as drug delivery systems, lab on a chip etc, in biomimetic robot research, acoustics, in optical membranes and so on. More details can be obtained from the PowerPoint presentation.
