Editorial Independence

Presentations | English

Independent journalism is regarded as the watchdog of democracy. Unconstrained media and editorial independence create the drive for social service and development among various pillars of democracy. But what is this editorial independence? Editorial independence is attained when the editor is free to make decisions regarding the content to be published without the interference of the publishers or as a matter of fact, any outside parties. This line between publisher and editor is what creates a free media. The duty of the publisher is to sustain the institution financially while that of the editor is to define the journal editorially. Editorial independence is necessary as it creates the pluralism necessary for democracy to thrive. It unclogs the vision of people and warns them of the manipulative hands around them. But is this editorial independence dying in today’s corporate driven world? Is it still relevant among today’s headline hunters? One of the issues that hinder editorial independence is the state control over media. Media is forced to publish articles in favor of the government. Anything that is not in accordance with their propaganda is considered unacceptable or sometimes even punishable. Physical attack against journalists who do not accept such conventions is not rare either. Safeguarding of editorial independence has thus become a necessity especially for the survival of humanity and democracy. Let us now watch this presentation to find out more about editorial independence and the issues that concern it.
