Presentations | English

Have you been shamed for eating too much, gaining weight, or binge eating? You are not alone. Eating disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide. An eating disorder is a disease that makes you feel bad about the food you eat. Eating disorders affect 5- 10 million Americans and 70 million people worldwide. They also affect many people, including women, men, children of all ages and races. Eating disorders have claimed the lives of thousands of people each year, devastating families and leaving those left empty and defenseless. Although eating disorders are and have always been classified as mental illnesses, they have been more common and continue to dictate life on a daily basis. With the advent of technology and the change in beauty standards worldwide, people, mostly women, suffer from these destructive mental illnesses that lead to feelings of inadequacy and the need to confirm unrealistic beauty standards. The destruction and trauma left by these disorders are detrimental to the physical, mental, and emotional health not only of the victims of the disease but also of their families and loved ones. To delve into the trauma and effects of these mental illnesses, it is first important to determine the types of eating disorders, their causes, and their greatest victims.
