As chocolate eggs, marshmallow bunnies, and hot cross buns begin to appear on supermarket shelves, it is easy to lose sight of the origins of the Easter holiday. Unlike Christmas and Valentine's Day, which have the same dates every year, the Easter holiday dates change every year. Easter will always fall on a Sunday, with Good Friday preceding it and Easter Monday following it. Easter is the main festival of the Christian church year, commemorating Jesus Christ's Resurrection on the third day after his Crucifixion. Although the exact origins of this religious feast day are unknown, some claim that the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Easter is a season of the Christian church year, not just a single day of celebration; the 40-day period preceding Easter Sunday is known as Lent and is a time of reflection and penance.
ഈസ്റ്റർ: യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ പുനരുത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മ കൊണ്ടാടുന്ന ദിനമാണ്‌ ഈസ്റ്റർ (Easter) അഥവാ ഉയിർപ്പ് തിരുനാൾ. ദുഃഖവെള്ളിയാഴ്ചക്ക് ശേഷം വരുന്ന ഞായറാഴ്ചയാണ്‌ ഈസ്റ്റർ ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഡിസംബർ 25-ന് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ക്രിസ്തുമസിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ഈസ്റ്ററിന് സ്ഥിരമായ തീയതി ഇല്ല. ഈസ്റ്റര്‍ ശരിക്കും ആനന്ദത്തിന്റെ ഞായര്‍ തന്നെയാണ്. രണ്ടായിരം വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ഈ ആഘോഷം പലവിധത്തില്‍ ലോകം കൊണ്ടാടുന്നു. ഈസ്റ്റര്‍ മുട്ട ഉയിര്‍പ്പുദിനത്തിലെ കുട്ടികളുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാനവിനോദം കൂടിയായിരുന്നു. അടച്ചുമുദ്രവച്ച കല്ലറയില്‍ നിന്ന് ക്രിസ്തു ഉയിര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേറ്റതിന്റെ ഓർമയ്ക്കായി ഇന്നും പല രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും ഈസ്റ്റര്‍ മുട്ടകള്‍ വെഞ്ചരിച്ച് ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് കൊടുക്കാറുണ്ട്.
