Hearing is one of the major senses and like vision is important for distant warning and communication. The ear is the organ of hearing and balance. The ears are paired organs, one on each side of the head with the sense organ itself, which is technically known as the cochlea, deeply buried within the temporal bones. The parts of the ear include external or outer ear, tympanic membrane (ear drum), middle ear, inner ear. The human ear, like that of other mammals, contains sense organs that serve two quite different functions. One is that of hearing and the other is that of postural equilibrium and coordination of head and eye movements. Ears receive sound waves and transform them into proper sounds, making sense to us. Hearing starts with the outer ear. Once the sound waves reach the inner ear, they are converted into electrical impulses. The auditory nerve sends these impulses to the brain. The brain then translates these electrical impulses as sound. The presentation gives in-depth understanding on the topic.
