In Islam, the term Shahid or Shaheed refers to a martyr. Shahid appears frequently in the Quran in the generic sense of "witness," but only once in the sense of "martyr; one who dies for his faith," which is more common in hadiths. The phrase is widely used as a posthumous title for persons who are said to have willingly accepted or even actively sought out their own death in order to offer witness to their convictions.
