Doctor. Activist. Reformer of social institutions. While Mysuru remembers Padmanabhan Palpu affectionately for his contributions to medicine, particularly during the tough times of the plague 120 years ago, the hardy doctor is remembered throughout Kerala as a social revolutionary. One can't help but appreciate this warrior's unbreakable character, who prevailed despite being shunned due to caste biases. Palpu's experiences left him with a strong desire to improve the lives of those in his community. Despite the rigours of his position, he tirelessly campaigned for the advancement of Ezhavas and other backward castes. Palpu spoke eloquently in newspapers about the evils of the caste system in order to raise public awareness. In 1896, he presented to the Travancore Maharaja a petition signed by 13,176 Ezhavas.
