A DC generator is a type of electrical generator. With the help of this instrument, mechanical energy is converted into direct current electricity. While an AC generator is a machine that converts mechanical power to AC electric energy, the DC generator converts mechanical energy into DC electrical power. The difference between AC and DC is that in AC, the electric current reverses direction with time. DC generators are used charge cells and batteries, in lighting, to find excitation in regenerative breaking in DC locomotives etcetera. While the above said are the functions of a DC generator, a DC motor works in the opposite manner. A DC motor converts electrical energy into electrical energy. Although, both the electric motor and generator are similar from a more construction point of view, the functions they do are the exact opposite.
