Common Confused Words in English

Presentations | English

Many writers are confused about words that sound and look alike. They may rely heavily on spell checker. However, the computer can only guess. You must be sure the word is the one with the meaning you intended, so you won’t confuse your reader. Anytime you’re not sure what a word means, look it up in a dictionary for both meaning and to see how it is used. Ask students to help you define each word and talk about how they all sound the same and that people often confuse them. Ask students if they can think of any other sets of words that people commonly confuse. Here are a few of the most common pairs with correct definitions and examples: Accept or Except, Affect or Effect, A Lot or A lot, Allusion / Illusion and many more. English has been the world’s universal language for many years. However, even though the language is widely used, it’s not easy to learn. There are many confusing oddities such as homophones, homographs, homonyms, and inconsistent spellings that conspire to make English difficult to learn and easy to misunderstand.
