Every region in the world has its own distinct attire and the people there are identified by these clothes. These attires are primarily defined by the weather of the area and the resources available to them. The two Telugu states also have their own distinct styles of dressing. Traditionally, the Telugu women wore sarees and blouses called ‘ravikelu’. Even these sarees and the type of drapes were defined by the work these women indulged in or the communities they belonged to. For instance, most Brahmin women wore a drape called ‘madi kattu’. Farmers and fisherwomen wore ‘gochi kattu’ while the women from the North coastal districts wore ‘Kappula Kattu’ with no blouse. Over time, due to the influence of northern and western cultures, other types of female attire like ‘Punjabi dresses’ and jeans and frocks made their way into our culture. Similarly, while traditionally the men of the land used to wear a dhoti or a ‘panacha’ along with a turban and an ‘uttariyam’ or ‘kanduva’ to cover their upper body, trousers, pants and shirts are today the most common dresses. This presentation offers a glance into the various traditional and modern-day attire that the Telugu people use.
