Classification of Computers

Presentations | English

There are four types in the classifications of computers by size: Supercomputer, Mainframe computer, Minicomputer and Micro Computer. They are also classified according to purpose, data handling and functionality. According to purpose, computers are either general purpose or specific purpose. General purpose computers are designed to perform a range of tasks. They have the ability to store numerous programs but lack in speed and efficiency. A Personal computer can be defined as a small, relatively inexpensive computer designed for an individual user. The mainframe is very large in size and is an expensive computer capable of supporting hundreds or even thousands of users simultaneously. Supercomputers are one of the fastest computers currently available. They are used for weather forecasting, scientific simulations, animated graphics, fluid dynamic calculations, nuclear energy research, electronic design and so on.
