Civil Disobedience Movement

Presentations | English

Civil disobedience is the active, professed refusal of a citizen to obey certain laws, demands, orders or commands of a government, corporation or other authority. On March 12, 1930, Gandhiji inaugurated the civil disobedience movement with the Dandi Salt March. Gandhi launched the Civil Disobedience Movement because Lord Irwin ignored Gandhi's eleven demands including the abolition of the salt tax. Civil disobedience has to be nonviolent to be called "civil". Hence, civil disobedience is sometimes equated with peaceful protests or nonviolent resistance. The Civil Disobedience Movement aimed at complete refusal of cooperation to the British and hinders the functioning of the government. It also aimed at refusal to paying taxes, boycotting government institutions and foreign goods. The presentation gives wider perspective on the topic.
