City clerks must ensure that the local government they serve is in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. In addition, skilled city clerks will have excellent communication skills, be great multi-taskers and be able to manage their time well. The Deputy City Clerk is responsible to support open and transparent local government through the administration of sound systems and practices as well as help support the governance activities of council, council committees and quasi-judicial tribunals. The city clerk is the local official for elections, local legislation, the Public Records Act, the Political Reform Act, and the Brown Act (open meeting laws).
