Tamil Nadu got almost 32 cities in the state. Out of which Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thiruchirappalli, Salem, Erode, Tirupur, Thirunelveli, Vellore, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi are considered to be the major cities. The capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai is one of most developed industrial and commercial centre. Madurai is the third largest city of the state and is one of the most famous pilgrimage centres as well. Coimbatore is called to be the Manchester of India for the large number of textile facilities at this place. Thiruchirappalli is located at the banks of River Cauvery, is a home to historical monuments and temples. Thirunelveli is famous for the dessert 'Halwa', is the fifth largest municipal corporation of the state. In the list of 'Smart Cities in Coming Year' Tamil Nadu has almost 12 states out of 24 south Indian states, which is a important matter to be discussed and appreciated about the state.
