The term "chromatography" comes from two Greek words: chroma, which means "colour," and graphein, which means "to write." Chromatography is a separation method in which the analyte and a liquid or gaseous mobile phase are mixed and pumped through a stationary phase. A mixture is applied to a stationary phase (solid or liquid) and a pure solvent, such as water or any gas, is allowed to pass over it slowly. At a certain time called retention time, each sample component elutes from the stationary phase. The signal of the components passing through the detector is recorded and displayed as a chromatogram.
