Characteristics of Collective Bargaining

Presentations | English

If someone agrees to sell a product at 10 percent off as long as the other person orders at least 12, that is an example of a bargain. Collective bargaining tends to improve the relations between workers and the union on the one hand and the employer on the other. It is a continuous process. It enables industrial democracy to be effective. It uses cooperation and consensus for settling disputes rather than conflict and confrontation. Their main function is to protect the economic and non- economic interests of the workers through constructive programmes. Trade unions may negotiate with the employer for better employment opportunities. It may provide a feeling of job-security to the workers through collective bargaining. It is a process of negotiating between management and workers represented by their representatives for determining mutually agreed terms and conditions of work which protect the interest of both workers and the management.
