The romantic song, "Chayam Karutha Chayam" was sung by P Madhuri for the film Chayam. The music was composed by G Devarajan master and lyrics written by Vayalar Ramavarma. Until Vayalar's death in the mid-1970s, the Vayalar-Devarajan combination was the most successful team. Hundreds of the team's songs are still remembered fondly by Malayalis. Chayam is a 1973 Malayalam film starring Sudheer and Sheela. It was directed by P N Menon. He was the uncle of another popular film director Bharathan.
ചായം എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന് വേണ്ടി പി മാധുരി പാടിയതാണ് "ചായം കറുത്ത ചായം" എന്ന റൊമാന്റിക് ഗാനം. വയലാർ രാമവർമയുടെ വരികൾക്ക് ജി ദേവരാജൻ മാസ്റ്ററാണ് സംഗീതം നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. 1970-കളുടെ മധ്യത്തിൽ വയലാറിന്റെ മരണം വരെ വയലാർ-ദേവരാജൻ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടായിരുന്നു ഏറ്റവും വിജയകരമായ ടീം. ടീമിന്റെ നൂറുകണക്കിന് ഗാനങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോഴും മലയാളികൾ സ്നേഹത്തോടെ ഓർക്കുന്നു. മലയാളം അനായാസമായി പഠിക്കണമെന്ന് തോന്നിയ ഗായികയായതിനാൽ, മലയാള സിനിമാ സംഗീത രംഗത്തേക്ക് കടന്നുവന്ന അന്യഭാഷാ ഗായികമാരുടെ മുൻനിരയിലായിരിക്കണം മാധുരി. തൽഫലമായി, മാധുരിയുടെ പാട്ടുകൾക്ക് വളരെ വ്യക്തമായ ഉച്ചാരണം ഉണ്ട്. 1973-ൽ സുധീറും ഷീലയും അഭിനയിച്ച ഒരു മലയാളചലച്ചിത്രമാണ് ചായം. പി എൻ മേനോൻ ആണ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തത്. മറ്റൊരു ജനപ്രിയ ചലച്ചിത്ര സംവിധായകൻ ഭരതന്റെ അമ്മാവനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.
