Carbon and Life

Presentations | English

"My feeling is that if a human being can coax life to build bonds between silicon and carbon, nature can do it too," Carbon is the backbone of every known biological molecule. Earth is likely built on carbon since each carbon atom can establish bonds with up to four other atoms at the same time. Because of this property, carbon is well-suited to forming the lengthy chains of molecules that serve as the foundation for life as we know it, such as proteins and DNA. Carbon is the source of all life: your skin and hair, blood and bone, muscle and sinews all rely on it. Essential carbon is found in the bark, leaf, root, and flower; fruit and nut; pollen and nectar; bee and butterfly; Doberman and dinosaur. Every cell in your body—indeed, every portion of every cell—is supported by a strong carbon backbone. The carbon in a mother's milk is transformed into the carbon in her child's beating heart. The chemical essence of your lover's eyes, hands, lips, and brain is carbon. When you breathe, carbon atoms expel; when you kiss, carbon atoms hug.
