‘Pastoralists in the Modern World’ is a chapter from the CBSE Class 9 textbook, India and the Contemporary World. Some of you might have seen people moving their cattle and herds through streets towards the nearest grasslands. These people are called nomads or pastorals. They move from one place to another to domesticate livestock as main source of their livelihood. India used to be rich in pastoral communities. However, after colonization some communities settled under the pressure or losses caused by British rule. Yet, numerous communities survived and kept on practicing pastoralism.
