Children at Work', written by Rudyard Kipling, is a chapter in the grade 8 NCERT English supplementary reader, It So Happened. This story written by Gita Wolf centres on how slum children live. This tale makes us think of being compassionate to these children and do what we can to assist them. Velu, a boy of 11, is the central character in the story. In order to escape the abuse meted out by his alcoholic father, he leaves home and ends up as a trash collector, a victim of child labour. Download this presentation to get the simplified summary as well as a detailed visual explanation of this lesson. Also included in it are the meanings of some of the difficult words and phrases from the chapter, the morals we recieve through the story, and a few higher order thinking skills questions to think beyond the lesson.
