"Brought and bought are the two words in English that sound similar, confusing not only to the novice but also to the experts! These are irregular verbs with an -ough- construction. When pronouncing the word 'brought' listen to the sound 'r' after 'b'. Brought which means “to carry someone or something to a place or person"", is the past tense and past participle of the word 'to bring' (verb). Whereas, there is no sound 'r' after 'b' when pronouncing the word 'Bought'. Bought is the past tense and past participle of the word 'to buy' (verb). It means “to obtain something by paying money for it.” Both brought and bought rhyme with the words cot, tot, and plot. Ex: I brought my bag along with me. I bought milk powder. In short, Bought indicates an economic transaction whereas brought defines the transport of something (or someone)."
