Every year, countries all over the world mark World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, as well as to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving blood donations. A blood service that provides patients with safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantities is a critical component of an efficient health-care system. Every year, the global theme of World Blood Donor Day changes to honour the selfless individuals who donate their blood for people they have never met. The day also serves as a call to action for governments and national health authorities to provide adequate resources and put in place systems and infrastructure to increase blood collection.
