The famous personality Ayyankali is one of the renaissance heroes of Kerala. He was commonly known as Mahatma Ayyankali. In the past, inequality and customs( more commonly myths) existed in Kerala. Mahatma Ayyankali was a great man who fought hard against this inequality to bring out justice. He was a member of the Pulaya community. He was the one who changed the discrimination shown by the upper castes towards the lower castes through struggles and other revolutionary movements.
കേരളത്തിലെ നവോത്ഥാന നായകരിൽ ഒരാൾ ആണ് പ്രമുഖനായ അയ്യങ്കാളി. ആദരപൂർവം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ എല്ലാവരും മഹാത്മാ അയ്യങ്കാളി എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്. പണ്ടു കാലങ്ങളിൽ കേരളത്തിൽ അസമത്വവും അനാചാരങ്ങളും നിലനിന്നിരുന്നു. അതിനെതിരെ ശക്തമായ പോരാട്ടം നടത്തിയ മഹത് വ്യക്തിയാണ് മഹാത്മാ അയ്യങ്കാളി. അദ്ദേഹം പുലയ സമുദായ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. മേൽ ജാതിക്കാർ കീഴ്ജാതിക്കാരോട് കാണിച്ചിരുന്ന വിവേചനം സമരങ്ങളിലൂടെയും മറ്റ് പോരാട്ടങ്ങളിലൂടെയും മാറ്റി എടുത്തത് അദ്ദേഹമാണ്.
