Breath in, then exhale. For this, we use our lungs. The primary respiratory system organs are the lungs. When we breathe in, the air is drawn through the windpipe, moved through the lungs' narrow passageways, and pressed into tiny air sacs. There are little blood vessels all around the little sacs. The flimsy membranes allow oxygen to get through and enter the bloodstream. The oxygen is taken up by the red blood cells, who then provide it to the organs and tissues of the body. The blood cells take up carbon dioxide, a byproduct of metabolism, as they release oxygen. After returning to the lungs, the carbon dioxide is exhaled to release it. Download the slide show.
