Al-Qalam

Audio | English

"The sixty eighth Surah or chapter is titled Al-Qalam or ""The Pen"". The title name is derived from the very first verse of the Surah. It comprises a total of 52 verses (ayah) which are again divided into 2 Rukus or Sections. It was revealed in Mecca during the time the persecution tightened, which would imply the later stages of Prophet Muhammad's preachings, all the more making Surah Al-Qalam a Meccan Surah. The Surah discusses God's justice and the Day of Judgement. The subject matters are later categorised into groups of three. The first few verses discusses Prophet Muhammad himself, by conveying the message that he is not a madman and that instead he is only an individual of great moral and social character. Later, the example of the gardners are presented, after which the matter of life and death is discussed remotely."
