The study of the earth's surface's physical characteristics is known as physiography. Based on the various physiographic traits, India is classified into six physiographic divisions. Such are the Northern and North-eastern Mountains, Northern Plain, Peninsular Plateau, Indian Desert, Coastal Plains, and Islands.
